About the Terry & Bonnie Sueltman Scholarship
Freeport High School alumni and former Freeport residents Terry & Bonnie Sueltman—inspired by their own experiences—started this scholarship fund to provide students with financial need an opportunity to attend a public college or public university in Illinois. This scholarship does not provide support to students planning to attend private schools.
In 1964, Freeport High School biology teacher and student counselor, Karl McWilliams, played a crucial role in helping Freeport native, Terry Sueltman, achieve his academic goals by providing access to financial resources to fund his four-year degree program at the University of Illinois – Champaign.
The Sueltman’s—wishing to honor and continue the legacy started by McWilliams—started the scholarship fund to annually provide financial support to one Freeport High School student. The scholarship will cover resources required to complete their degree program, up to four years. Graduates of Freeport High School who are enrolled at Highland Community College pursuing the remaining years of their degree may also apply in order to finish a degree at a public four-year college or university in Illinois.
