Civic Health

THE FOUNDATION FOR NORTHWEST ILLINOIS

The Foundation for Northwest Illinois is actively strengthening regional civic health by fostering equitable participation, community trust, and grassroots leadership across Stephenson, Jo Daviess, and Carroll counties. Originally established in 1975, the organization rebranded in 2023 to reflect its broader regional reach. Today, the foundation looks at community health through a holistic lens, prioritizing civic infrastructure, local journalism, and public engagement to ensure that all residents have a voice in shaping their communities.

Cultivating Local Leadership

A cornerstone of the foundation’s civic health initiative is the Emerging Leadership Network (ELN). This platform connects diverse, civic-minded professionals to build local engagement from the ground up.

  • Skill Development: Preparing residents for nonprofit board leadership roles.
  • Community Dialogue: Convening regular roundtables to discuss challenges in overlooked areas.
  • Resource Connections: Introducing emerging leaders to community partners and philanthropic strategies.

Strengthening the Civic Fabric

Beyond individual leadership, The Foundation reinforces the region’s democratic backbone by investing in community information and collaboration. In April 2026, The Foundation participated in the Illinois Local News Summit alongside groups like Press Forward Chicago to address the role of local journalism in public transparency and civic health. Additionally, The Foundation launched its Northwest Illinois Nonprofit Alliance to come alongside nonprofit organizations to assist in their health & growth.

By pooling donations into unrestricted funds and Community Impact Grants, The Foundation ensures that its $5+ million legacy of grantmaking directly addresses emerging, locally identified civic needs.
