Freeport, Illinois — January 8, 2026 — The Foundation for Northwest Illinois is proud to announce the establishment of the Terry and Bonnie Sueltman Scholarship Fund, a new scholarship created to support Freeport High School graduates as they pursue higher education.
The scholarship reflects Terry and Bonnie Sueltman’s deep belief in the power of education and their commitment to investing in students from their local community. The fund will provide financial assistance to help ease the burden of tuition, books, and other educational expenses, allowing students to focus on achieving their academic and career goals.
“Scholarships like the Terry and Bonnie Sueltman Scholarship Fund are transformative for students and families,” said Michelle DeHaven Quast, CEO of The Foundation for Northwest Illinois. “This fund is a wonderful example of how local generosity can create lasting opportunities for Freeport High School graduates to continue their education and build strong futures.”
In 1964, Freeport High School biology teacher and student counselor, Karl McWilliams, played a crucial role in helping Freeport native, Terry Sueltman, achieve his academic goals by providing access to financial resources to fund his four-year degree program at the University of Illinois – Champaign. The Sueltman’s—wishing to honor and continue the legacy started by McWilliams—started the scholarship fund to annually provide financial support to one Freeport High School student.
The Terry and Bonnie Sueltman Scholarship Fund will be administered by The Foundation for Northwest Illinois, ensuring long-term stewardship and continued support for students year after year. This fund strengthens educational pathways within the community and encourages students to pursue postsecondary success.
“We are honored to partner with donors like Terry and Bonnie Sueltman, whose generosity demonstrates a strong commitment to our local students,” Quast added. “Their investment will help remove financial barriers and empower students from Freeport High School to reach their full potential.”
Scholarship applications will be available through The Foundation for Northwest Illinois’ scholarship program. The deadline to apply is April 1.
