[FREEPORT, IL – December 14, 2022] – The Freeport Community Foundation (FCF) has awarded grants to regional food pantries totaling $32,000 as part of the continuing Food Insecurity Initiative launched in 2021. These unrestricted funds were raised through community support during the FCF’s 2021 year-end campaign to be utilized at the onset of increased winter needs. Each of the following pantries will receive $1,600 in support which may be used as best determined by the immediate needs of each respective organization:

  1. The Salvation Army, Freeport
  2. Gospel Outreach of Freeport
  3. Joseph’s Pantry, Freeport
  4. Freeport Area Church Cooperative Food Pantry
  5. New Jerusalem Church Food Pantry
  6. Amity Society of Freeport Food Pantry
  7. New Life Community Center
  8. German Valley Food Pantry
  9. Pecatonica Community Food Pantry
  10. Durand Area Food Pantry
  11. Faith Community Food Pantry
  12. Lena-Winslow Food Pantry
  13. East Dubuque Lion’s Club Food Pantry
  14. Elizabeth Food Basket
  15. Fulton Thompson Food Pantry
  16. United Churches of Galena Food Pantry
  17. Hanover Food Pantry
  18. Savanna Food Pantry
  19. St. John’s Lutheran Church
  20. Hearts that Care

“The Freeport Community Foundation is honored to be a conduit between the generous residents of northwestern Illinois and those residents in need throughout our region” stated Michelle DeHaven-Quast, Executive Director of the Freeport Community Foundation. “As the community foundation for northwest Illinois, we are very aware of the extreme need throughout our region. While these grants presented by our Board of Directors from our Marvin / Wilson Unrestricted Fund will provide some immediate assistance, the need continues to grow.”

In addition, to the funds awarded to 20 regional food pantries, the FCF Board of Directors also awarded five $1,600 grants to the following regional nonprofit organizations:

  1. Cats Care / River Ridge Schools – to support emergency needs of River Ridge students
  2. Pirates Pantry / Galena Schools – to support emergency needs of Galena students
  3. West Carroll Schools – to support emergency needs of West Carroll students
  4. The Workshop, Galena – to support the organization’s Community Meals program
  5. Friends Forever Humane Society – to support operational needs of the shelter
