The Foundation for Northwest Illinois recently launched the East of West initiative, a comprehensive community development program centered in the very heart of our city. More than just a neighborhood project, this initiative represents a homecoming to the historic ground where our community was founded.

To kick off this journey, the Foundation awarded its first major grant—a $50,000 investment from the Jane Addams Legacy Fund—to the King Community Campus. This campus is the “soul” of our community, housing the Amity Society, the Boys & Girls Club of Freeport & Stephenson County, and NICAA. These organizations nurture and inspire our most vital population: our children. Every day, they instill the respect, dignity, and love essential for the growth of our next generation.

However, the impactful programming happening inside these walls depends entirely on the stability of the building itself. If the facility falters, the good work within it falters too. By funding critical building upgrades, this grant ensures a safe and dignified environment where our children can continue to thrive. If East of West is the heart of our community, the King Community Campus is its soul—and together, we must work to protect and grow both.
