The Foundation for Northwest Illinois is proud to announce a $575,000 investment in the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, securing the final phase of construction for the highly anticipated $6.5 million facility. This investment ensures the completion of the museum’s relocation project, which is scheduled to open its doors to the public this summer.
The investment addresses a critical funding gap for the final phase of the project, which includes the delicate relocation of over 14,000 historical artifacts, the installation of professional-grade interactive exhibits, and the creation of a state-of-the-art archival room. Located next to the historic Nelson Stillman House, the new 8,500-square-foot museum will be fully ADA accessible, offering a modernized home for Galena’s rich history.
Michelle DeHaven Quast, President & CEO of The Foundation for Northwest Illinois, emphasized the regional importance of the project:
“Our mission is to empower community partners to build a stronger Northwest Illinois, and this investment is a direct commitment to our region’s prosperity. The new Galena & U.S. Grant Museum is not just a cultural landmark; it is a powerful economic engine that will drive tourism, support local businesses, and strengthen the financial vitality of both Galena and Jo Daviess County for years to come. We are proud to support a project that honors our past while securing a more resilient economic future for our residents”
Tessa Flak, Executive Director of the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society, shared her gratitude for the community’s support:
“This project has been decades in the making, and reaching the final phase is a monumental achievement for our staff, volunteers, and supporters. The Foundation’s investment allows us to move forward with the specialized care required to transport our most precious items, like the ‘Peace in Union’ painting, into a facility that can finally provide the climate control and space they deserve”.
Highlighting the economic benefits, David Schmit from Northwest Illinois Economic Development noted:
“The new museum is a cornerstone of our regional tourism strategy. By nearly tripling the museum’s annual attendance capacity, we are creating a significant economic driver for Galena and the surrounding communities. This investment by The Foundation for Northwest Illinois is a vote of confidence in the continued growth and prosperity of Northwest Illinois.”
John Gronen, President of Gronen, the firm overseeing the construction and development, echoed Schmitt’s comments. Gronen also noted his excitement around the vision of the museum coming to fruition, stating the facility seamlessly blends modern accessibility and features with the historic charm for which Galena is known.
The Foundation for Northwest Illinois continues its 50-year legacy of serving Stephenson, Jo Daviess, and Carroll counties by fostering strategic growth and philanthropic impact.
Area residents, regional businesses, and U.S. history enthusiasts can also invest in the future of our region’s history by making a gift to the Ulysses S. Grant Historical Fund at The Foundation for Northwest Illinois, ensuring this landmark project reaches the finish line while providing the sustainable, long-term support needed to preserve our local heritage for generations to come. www.fornwil.org/galena-grant-museum
