Anyone can be a philanthropist, because philanthropy is powered by our need to connect with others, and by our desire for a better world. That means anyone and everyone can get involved in local philanthropic efforts! The Foundation for Northwest Illinois partners with individuals, families, and businesses to create permanent charitable funds, making it possible to give back to our region in a way that lasts forever.
People get started in philanthropy in many ways:
- Volunteering for a local nonprofit organization
- Serving on a nonprofit board of directors
- Making a donation online to support disaster relief
- Rounding up at check out
- Responding to online or direct mail fundraisers
- Donating to a giving circle or other fund at The Foundation
Some decide to establish a fund after several years of informal giving. Field-of-interest funds, for example, offer flexibility to adapt to changing community needs within a broader area of interest. Impactful giving is not limited to those with vast fortunes; anyone can contribute meaningfully, whether through money, time, expertise, or advocacy.
Many who give are recognized for aligning their philanthropic efforts with personal passions or areas where they can make a unique impact, such as Dolly Parton’s focus on literacy, José Andrés’ humanitarian food relief, and Billie Jean King’s advocacy for women in sports. What’s more, the rise of collective giving, strategic philanthropy, and new collaborative funding models make it easier for people to pool resources and maximize impact.
Right now, the Illinois Gives Tax Credit Program makes it possible for an Illinois donor to give to an established endowed fund or to start one on their own and receive a 25% tax credit while making a meaningful impact for a cause that matters to them.
Please reach out anytime, wherever you are along your philanthropic journey. The Foundation for Northwest Illinois is here to help everyone make a difference on their own journey.
